Friday 16/1/15 – Our last day in Lech and the Europe Ski Holiday is now about 2/3rds over – it goes too quick. However, the plan is to ski Rendle in the morning, lunch at St Christoph at Hospital Alm and then a free afternoon. Paula & Amanda were going to stay in Lech (which turned out to be a good move) and then get the 12:00 post bus to St Christoph and meet us at lunch.
Things didn’t go quite to plan –
To get to St Anton / St Christoph from Lech you could either catch the yellow post bus all the way in (which costs a few Euros) or take the blue free town shuttle service to Alpe Rause and then catch the Vallfargherbahn and ski in. We took the blue town shuttle as it left half an hour before the post bus and an extra ski run into St Anton is a good cruising leg warmer. When we got to Alpe Rause, we found that the Vallfagherbahn had broken down, and there was an indefinite wait for it to be up and going. There was no way to ski into St Anton from where we were. So we waited about half an hour and caught the yellow post bus which we could have got from Lech. However, by this time, there was a crowd waiting to do there same thing and the last leg of this bus trip was crowded and also took a long time to load as the driver was collecting loose change from passengers to pay for this journey.
When we got to Rendle, it was wind blown and eventually they shut the main chair. So we left and went to the other side of the valley, St Anton which was in much better condition. We skied a few runs there and made our way to St Christoph and Hospitz Alm for lunch. This is a must see place on any visit to this area – an 800 year old building now operating as a hotel and restaurant – hard to get in without pre booking. On entry, the wall is plastered with photos of famous celebrities who have visited here (Boris Becker, Vlad Putin are two I recognised easily).
All were impressed with the ambience of the place. Paula, Amanda Mel and Dennis bussed it there and we had a group of about 20 squeezed in. After lunch, half bused back to lech and the other half stayed out and skied around Galzig until about 3:30 pm.
Back at Lech, I returned hire gear, collected ski pass deposit, and then packed for tomorrow’s transfer.
Harry’s thong award speech was typical Harry – more like a sermon, but funny. However, after a few minutes he passed the award on to Dennis for being a bad weather forecaster (6 incorrect forecasts is 6 days)
