Saturday, 10/1/15 – Today is transfer day -end of week one of the Europe Ski Tour 2015. This is a three week group ski holiday. but it is amazing how quickly the weeks slip by. Saying goodbye to Davos and Club Hotel, the weather was ok – not fine, but a bit damp – some rain last night – just as well we are not skiing today. Also said goodbye to Daniel, Kylie, Elli and Hamish – they only joined the group for one week and were continuing their journey themselves.
The bus arrived early as everybody were still bringing their luggage to the foyer and settling their room accounts. We loaded and got away on time.
The journey to Lech was uneventful and it is only a short two hour trip. The countryside showed a loss of snow compared to a week ago when we arrived. Travelling through Liechtenstein, the smallest European Country and the capital Vaduz – Saturday morning and hardly a soul around. Entering Austria via Feldkirch, we knew we were in a different country as mobile phones on the bus (with global roaming) started getting messages alerting them of a new phone carrier service being available.
Driving though Zurs to Lech it looked as there was plenty of snow cover – last weeks snowfalls topped up the cover and as we later found out, most of the off piste areas were also ok. We arrived at Hotel Sandhof a little before 12:30 – checked in and as tradition dictates, quickly went to the nearby Italian restaurant for lunch (Nona pizza as usual).
Picked up hire skis (with group discount for our group) and ski passes and then to Tanbergerhof for the traditional après ski activity – Rod was happy as a pig in mud, returning to his old stomping grounds. There is always something going on here – Lech has a real buzz about it.
There were also four new arrivals for this week – they made their own way here from Zurich – Dennis, David and Tosca as well as (special) Harry who was just skiing this week only with the group.
6:30 pm – Happy Hour at the Sandhof Hotel bar. A chance to welcome the new arrivals to the rest of the group. The conversation noise level was quite high – that equals people relaxed, mixing well, talking about their holiday and having a good time.
A quiet day and not much to go on, but nominated Harry for the thong as he arrived at midday after a 24 hour flight from Australia and instead of getting over flight and resting, he went skiing. He had to get that extra half day in !! Also Rod got a nomination for lunch time manners, but thong awarded to Deanne for taking Paula and myself for a mystery elevator ride, not letting us out and taking us to different floors…. you should never mess with a thong holder!
The weather forecast looks promising with large snowfalls predicted for tonight – so tomorrow should be a good ski day – let’s hope!!!
